Baby Safe Haven Law

In the 2006 session, the VT Legislature passed S.27 known as the Baby Safe Haven Law. This statute provides the opportunity for parents of infants less than 30 days old to deliver them to "safe haven" locations where they can be given up for adoption through the Department for Children and Families (DCF).

The statute specifically mentions fire and police stations as safe haven locations, but also provides for delivery of infants to "a 911 emergency responder at a location where the responder and the person have agreed to transfer the child."

The VT EMS Office is working with the DCF on a specific protocol for EMS organizations and personnel who may receive an infant under the provisions of the Baby Safe Haven law. In the interim, if your ambulance service on any EMS personnel encounters a parent who wishes to surrender a newborn infant:

FEMA Independent Study Program

The Emergency Management Institute (EMI) offers more than fifty independent study courses. These are self-paced courses designed for people who have emergency management responsibilities and the general public. For most courses you will need to download and print the materials. Others are interactive courses that you can take directly over the internet. All are offered free-of-charge to those who qualify for enrollment. Each Independent Study Course includes lessons with practice exercises and a final examination. Students who score 75 percent or better are issued a certificate of achievement from EMI.

Course completion times vary from two to fourteen hours, depending on the course and the student’s background. College credit can be obtained after successful completion of a course.

The staff on the star represents Medicine and Healing.

Just as a pharmacists have the mortar and pestle and doctors have the caduceus, Emergency Medical Technicians have a symbol, its use is encouraged both by the American Medical Association and the Advisory Council within the Department of Health, Education and Welfare. The symbol applies to all emergency medical goods and services which are funded under the DOT/EMS program. (MORE...)

Did you know that you don't need to be an EMT to join Richmond Rescue. Perhaps you might wish to start out as a driver or as a "First Responder"; a program whereby your training is much simplier than an EMT and gives you a chance to get your feet wet.
